As I was going through the many events that we’ve held over the years before becoming an “official” not-for-profit, I came across these oldies but goodies. They are the first and second conferences that I solely put together under the leadership of Rev Hezekiah Stewart. That was my first time making the news. I was extremely nervous! Seeing my mother, Ruby Moore, in the video is bittersweet. I am heartbroken she is not here, but I am glad that she gave me the strength to go on.
The Watershed Human Development Agency and D2NINE.com (Director, Chlarissa Harrison, presented the “Woman in the Mirror: Redefining the Sisterhood” Women’s Empowerment Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas on August 19, 2006 and again in October 2007. We took it all the way to Washington DC in 2008! I hope to find the pictures from that to share soon!
The conference was based on the best-selling book Souls of My Sisters by Dawn Marie Daniels and Candace Sandy. Dawn Marie Daniels was an editor for eight years at Simon & Schuster, and Candace Sandy now serves as Congressman Gregory Meeks’s (D-NY) communications director. Both Dawn and Candace have been honored with the 2002 Amazing Women Award and the Golden Pen Award for their literary efforts.
We were excited to have Ms. Daniels and Ms. Sandy as keynote speakers for this event. Women of all colors, statuses, and situations came together to discover their inner selves while redefining the sisterhood within their communities.
